Challenge of the Week: Singletasking

I’m an inveterate multitasker. At work, more often than I’d like, I end up eating lunch in front of my computer. After work, it’s not unusual for my laptop to be open while my smartphone is in hand and a movie plays in the background.

Multitasking: watching a movie, editing a photo, surfing the web, and checking Instagram.

Multitasking: watching a movie, editing a photo, surfing the web, and checking Instagram.

And I’m not alone: multitasking is endemic to the Internet Age. How many of you are working or surfing the internet while eating breakfast, watching TV, or in a meeting?

This past week, I decided to set myself a challenge: stop multitasking. At the beginning of the week, I focused on two types of multitasking in particular – eating while using my computer, and using more than 1 electronic device (computer, smartphone, TV) at a time. But I also started paying attention to other ways I was multitasking and tried to cut those out. For instance, I found myself tempted to catch up on correspondence or get other work done while in meetings.

So how’d the week go?

Eliminating multitasking while eating was the best part. Taking a real lunch at work gave me a chance to catch up with colleagues and then get back to work feeling a little bit refreshed. I also wasn’t mindlessly snacking – because if I did grab a snack, I knew I had to step away from whatever I was doing. I enjoyed catching up with my husband over dinner every night. Some mornings we hung out during breakfast, but that usually wrapped up quickly, and I missed my morning routine of checking email and reading blogs. But I didn’t miss getting caught up in work before I headed out for the day!

My reduced use of the computer at night was a good thing overall – I got to bed earlier and felt like I had relaxed a bit more. I didn’t get caught up in late-night nothingness (like mindless internet surfing) at all this week. But I missed being able to sort through photos or catch up with online friends while watching a silly movie. And somehow, having something in the background makes it easier to tackle things like blog posts. I haven’t put up a post since last Saturday! :(

I was more mentally present in meetings, which was a good thing. But the amount of time I spent in meetings felt more oppressive, and I wanted to get a lot more work done. This week was trickier because I actually did have more meetings and less uninterrupted time than usual.

The big thing was that I was more aware of what I was doing – and not doing – this week. Going forward, I’ll go back to some multitasking but try to be more conscious in deciding when to multitask – rather than just falling into the habit of doing it!

When do you find yourself multitasking?

Drinks on Me!

One of the many things I love about living in San Francisco is its short distance to wine country. In the summer, I like to don my summeriest of dresses and go wine tasting with my husband.

(I actually like to go wine tasting all year ’round, but, alas, I can’t always do it in my summeriest of dresses.)

I have to admit that I’ve worn this particular dress (which the writers at ModCloth aptly named the “Drinks on Me Dress”) a few times in wine country. With its classic cut and kitschy wine & cocktail glass print, it just begs to be worn wine tasting!

For this trip, we went to Healdsburg. We stopped first at Dry Creek Vineyard and Passalacqua Winery (where these photos were taken – they’re across the street from each other), then headed to Rodney Strong. Rodney Strong, in particular, is worth the visit for its reds, but I also enjoyed the whites at Dry Creek and the sangiovese at Passalacqua. And as you can see below, Dry Creek had a lovely garden that I rather fancied!

Happy Fifth of July!

For those of you who call the United States your home, I hope you had a lovely Independence Day! And for everyone else, I hope you had a lovely fourth of July. :)

Last night I watched the fireworks from my rooftop, and caught a few smiles:

Shiny happy fireworks!

It was a good show, although SF’s perpetual summer evening fog hung over the city. Definitely had some interesting effects, like in the photo below!

Earlier in the day I went to my friends’ house for a super yummy barbecue. They’ve got a smoker, so among other things they served up homemade smoked knockwurst and chicken. Noms! (Note to self: get apartment with yard & buy smoker.)

Summer Warmth

Summer in San Francisco: I still (usually) need to wear cardigans, but I try to mix in elements that remind me of the sultry summers I grew up with.

Style Challenge: Neon!

Aloha! It’s Friday, which means another style challenge! The theme this week is neon. And where better to wear neon colors than on a sunset cruise?

I grabbed this bathing suit at a super-tropical store: Old Navy. And I paired it with a jersey knit chevron-striped skirt and a jersey knit navy cardigan when the breezes picked up. Plus a pair of pearl earrings.

Style Challenge: Summer Hats

This week I participated in a style challenge! The theme was summer hats. My hat of choice? A fancy, Melbourne Cup / Kentucky Derby style hat in bold orange, with orange and crème colored feathers.

I paired it with my newest Bettie Page dress – it’s aqua with orange accents, and printed with Eiffel Towers and fleur de lis. And I love the fun detail in the back!

Alas, the weather in San Francisco in the past couple of days has been less-than-summery, so I had to add a cardigan. (The eternal story of SF “summer”!) But with the bright colors, I’m bringing in my own summer sun!

Julep Maven Review and Giveaway!

I’m kind of in love with the Julep Maven subscription. For $20/month, I receive a prettily wrapped package of 2 nail polishes plus either a 3rd polish or a beauty product. It’s a super fun treat to receive in the mail!

I posted about Julep Maven in April, and Julep polishes have shown up on several of my manis (most have ended up on my Instagram feed – katealamode – and I’ve been compiling them in a Facebook album too). And now I’m super excited to announce that I’ve teamed up with Julep Maven for this review and giveaway! Read on for the details. :)

Julep gave me a choice of one of their intro boxes to review, so I chose the “It Girl” intro box since it included nail polishes I haven’t received in my normal subscription.

I always love how the box is wrapped up like a present. :)

The It Girl box came with three polishes: Jessica, a light blue crème (in person it has cool tones, like a light periwinkle); Brooke, a sheer purple shimmer; and Mandy, an intense coral crème.

I started out with Mandy. This polish has a really smooth, easy-to-apply texture. It definitely requires 2 coats, because I found with 1 coat it was slightly sheer. But I paint fairly thin coats and always assume I’m going to have to do 2 coats, anyway. As you can see below, it’s a very bold coral – super saturated and on the darker side.

Mani with two coats of Julep Mandy polish, an intense coral crème.

Then I tried out Brooke. Like Mandy, Brooke is very smooth (despite the fact that it’s a shimmer) and easy-to-apply. I applied 2 coats, which gave my nails a purple hue and lots of sparkle.

I ended with Jessica. Jessica has a much thicker texture, so it was more difficult to apply. But I REALLY loved the color. It’s a cool light blue – more of a light periwinkle than the baby blue that Julep describes it as. I ended up doing 2 coats, but it was thick enough that just 1 coat would have been fine.

And just for kicks, I added one coat of Brooke. I thought the effect was very pretty – a nice hint of sparkle, and just the slightest purple hue. In the photo below, the 2 nails in the middle have 1 coat of Brooke over 2 coats of Jessica, while the other 2 nails just have 2 coats of Jessica.

If you want to give the Julep Maven subscription a try, use the promo code MAVENINTRO & you’ll get your intro box for a penny! Just head over to the Julep website, take the Julep Maven style quiz, and sign up! Of course, you can choose a different style if you don’t love the one recommended by the quiz. And it is a subscription, so you’ll automatically receive boxes for future months unless you cancel or opt out for the month. (That’s actually one of the great things about Julep Maven: you can choose not to receive a box for a month, or even send it to a friend as a gift!)

UPDATE (7/2/12): CONGRATULATIONS TO CARLEY L. FOR WINNING THE RAFFLE! You can also enter my giveaway raffle for a Julep Maven intro box! It’s super easy: just head over to the Rafflecopter app on my Facebook page and follow the instructions there! Gone Fishin’

I went camping with a few friends at Plumas National Forest. We found a spot by one of the creeks to set up our site, then enjoyed a low-key weekend of fishing and hanging out.

What’s your favorite way to spend a summer weekend?

What I wore:
Kitschy Kitchen Dress by Heartbreaker, via ModCloth. Nothing like a cotton halter dress to keep you cool on warm, sunny days. And since I don’t really get to wear sundresses in San Francisco, I take full advantage of wearing them when I head off to warmer destinations outside the city!

A Birthday in Style! With Florals and Wine

Did you know that June is the best month ever? Lovely weather, tons of flowers in bloom, summer fruits and vegetables are making their way to market . . .

. . . AND it just so happens to be my birthday month!

For my birthday this past Sunday, Pat took me wine tasting in Napa Valley (before we headed out to dinner in the evening). It was a warm, sunny, absolutely gorgeous day, and I was in the mood for bright florals.

I was also excited to wear my new art deco era bracelet. It was a birthday gift from Pat that he had given me a couple of days early because he was so excited about it. And with good reason – I adore it!

The dress is one I got a couple of years ago from ModCloth. It’s always struck me something that should be worn to a birthday party, if not a wedding! I paired it with a lightweight cardigan from Banana Republic (also from a couple of years ago), dark green Miz Mooz t-straps, and a camel-colored Anne Klein handbag.

As far as the wine tasting went, we actually ended up spending almost 3 hours at Hall, one of our favorite wineries (and where these photos were taken). The wine was excellent and we were able to sit outside and savor each tasting. I definitely enjoyed that slow, easy pace more than rushing around from winery to winery.

It was a very happy day!

Seafoam and Coral

It rarely gets very warm in San Francisco. In the winter it’s usually in the 50s and 60s — which is wonderful for someone who dealt with chilly Pennsylvanian winters for most of her life! But in late spring and summer it’s usually in the 60s and low 70s, and layers are always required.

Except for every once in awhile when the weather warms up a little, and I rejoice by wearing a sundress!

I love the retro styling of this coral Bettie Page dress, which is actually based on a 1950s Elvgren painting: “That Low-Down Feeling (Who, Me?)”. This dress was one of a series that Bettie Page did last year, all based on Elvgren pin-up paintings. The series was fantastic and I’m hoping Bettie Page does something like it again!

I paired the sundress with seafoam green accessories and nails:
